Amendment to AALE Bylaws

To buttress past AALE practice and define in greater detail what it means to be a “public member” of the AALE Board of Trustees, the Board of Trustees voted on November 29, 2010 that the following amendment be added to Article IV. Section B.2 of its bylaws:
They [“public members”] must also demonstrate an understanding of the purposes of liberal
education. This can be demonstrated through the individual’s own educational experience, such
as having graduated from a liberal arts college or a liberal arts program at a comprehensive
college or university, or through the individual’s personal, professional or scholarly affiliations,
associations, and activities that are related to one or more aspects of liberal education. Public
members of the Board of Trustees may be sought for their professional competencies in areas
relevant to the Academy, management and advancement of the organization, such as law,
accounting, financial management, public or political relations, regulatory compliance, or
evaluation and monitoring.
In accordance with the Academy’s procedures for amending its bylaws, this announcement stands as public notice that the amendment was approved.
Proposed Amendment to AALE Bylaws

October 15, 2010, meeting proposed the following amendment to be added to
Article IV. Section B.2 of its bylaws:
They [“public members”] must also demonstrate an understanding of
the purposes of liberal education. This can be demonstrated through the
individual’s own educational experience, such as having graduated from
a liberal arts college or a liberal arts program at a comprehensive college
or university, or through the individual’s personal, professional or scholarly
affiliations, associations, and activities that are related to one or more
aspects of liberal education. Public members of the Board of Trustees

the Academy, management and advancement of the organization, such
as law, accounting, financial management, public or political relations,
regulatory compliance, or evaluation and monitoring.
In accordance with the Academy’s procedures for amending its bylaws, proposed
amendments shall be submitted to the Board, the Council of Scholars, and
institutional members of the Academy at least thirty days prior to consideration
thereof by the Board. The Academy’s Board will consider the amendment after
the thirty days has elapsed. Should the Board approve the amendment, notice
will be posted on the Academy’s website subsequently.
